WHAT IS COLD THERAPY AND WHY DO I NEED IT? 0The most commonly prescribed treatment for post surgical joint recovery is cold therapy, also known as cryotherapy. By constricting blood vessels and slowing the flow of blood to a specific site, pain and swelling can be decreased. Cold therapy has also helped many physicians reduce the amount of post surgical narcotics they prescribe.
Cold therapy in conjunction with compression can greatly reduce inflammation at the surgical site and aid in tissue repair. By using continuous cold therapy, the length of time it takes to recover is drastically reduced.
In addition to those benefits, cold therapy has shown to improve post operative range of motion, which will help the recovering patient during physical therapy. These factors will allow for an easier transition to completing every day tasks, and ultimately contribute to positive short term outcomes.
Medical West Healthcare Center carries the Breg Polar Cube Cold Therapy Unit. The unit is lightweight, easy to use - and comes with everything needed to start the patient down the road to recovery. The cold therapy unit is designed to provide a continuous flow of ice cold water to the area of recovery for (up to) 6-8 hours.
The Breg Polar Cube will come with an ice/water cooler, an extra large multi use pad (which can be used for ankles, knees, hips, lower back, shoulders and elbows.
The unit also comes with compression straps for securing the multi use pad to the recovery site, as well as an AC adapter.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT ADULT INCONTINENCE PRODUCT 0
Choosing the right incontinence product can feel overwhelming, but our experts are here to help!
“When someone develops incontinence, the inability to control their bladder or bowels, it can feel overwhelming because there are so many products on the market. They often drive to their nearest grocery or drugstore and just pick a random product. Since grocery or drug store employees are not trained on incontinence, it leaves many feeling embarrassed and confused about which product to choose. We often see customers who come to us frustrated that their product is leaking and sometimes they have even doubled up on products, believing that layering products is the best solution”, says Tammie Kister, an Incontinence Specialist at Medical West Healthcare Center.
WHY GET VITAMIN B-12 INJECTIONS? 0
B-12 is a water soluble vitamin that is one of eight essential B vitamins. This important vitamin plays a critical role in the maintenance of the body's nervous system, is necessary for DNA and RNA synthesis, is involved in hemoglobin production, as well as other important functions.
Start by checking your B-12 levels. A quick visit to Any Lab Test Now (located inside Medical West Healthcare Center's Clayton location) to check your B-12 levels for sufficiency can be done as a standalone test or as part of a more comprehensive micronutrient panel.
Vegans are often deficient simply due to the lack of eating B-12 rich foods. However, some people eat foods that contain vitamin B-12, yet still find they are deficient. Some causes for this could be due to underlying conditions that prevent their body from absorbing B-12.
WHY CHOOSE A KNEE SCOOTER OVER CRUTCHES? 0Daily life can be difficult after foot surgery, a broken ankle, or a fractured foot. Luckily, the knee scooter is a fantastic option to help you get around with ease. Forget about crutches, they can be a pain on the hands and armpits, and difficult if balance and stability are an issue. The knee scooter alleviates the burden of crutches, letting you rest your knee softly on the pad and coast comfortably through your day.
Medical West Healthcare Center’s knee scooter of choice is the Essential Free Spirit. Unlike other brands, the Free Spirit knee scooter has a more comfortable pad to rest your knee, dual breaks for stopping power, and a rack and pinion steering system for stability when encountering sidewalk cracks and bumps.
